Hot Yoga’s roots trace back to Bikram Yoga, which emerged in the U.S. during the 1970s under Bikram Choudhury. It introduced a structured practice of 26 poses and two breathing exercises in a heated room (105°F/40.5°C, 40% humidity), mimicking India’s climate. This approach enhances flexibility, detoxification, and focus. Bikram’s brand imposed copyright restrictions, preventing instructors from using the name or exact sequence unless authorized. Seeking independence, instructors developed their own heated yoga styles, leading to "Hot Yoga." Studios like Hot Yoga Portland embraced this shift, maintaining the heated environment while offering varied sequences for greater flexibility and diversity. Today, Hot Yoga has grown into a global phenomenon, representing a dynamic and inclusive yoga practice.
