Power Yoga
isn't a particular brand. Instead, it is a style of yoga
that gained appeal amongst fitness aficionados. It was created in the 1990s by yoga instructors such as Beryl Bender Birch and Bryan Kest, who wanted to make yoga more accessible and appealing to a wider audience, particularly those interested in physical fitness.
"Power Yoga" refers to vigorous, strength-based yoga that is neither branded nor owned by any individual or organization. Many yoga studios in Portland and teachers provide their own variations, which differ in intensity, style, and concentration. Notably, Kest, Bender, and others have created distinct approaches within this broader group.

AFTERBURN YOGA
AFTERBURN YOGA
Achieving the afterburn effect, or EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption), is possible in your Portland Power Yoga
classes through focusing on arm
and leg
sequences. To maximize afterburn, incorporate high-intensity, dynamic sequences that engage multiple muscle groups, such as planks and warrior poses. Combining strength-building
poses with continuous movement elevates the heart rate and increases overall caloric burn. Including compound movements and core engagement
further enhances this effect. This approach boosts metabolism and promoting weight loss and overall fitness and muscle strength. Our progressive sequences with lessons of core renewal blends with the Afterburn sequence as a synergistic match.

SALUTATION STRETCH
The Salutation Stretch Sequenc blends mindful movement with deep stretching and breath work. It starts with core warm-ups like Cat-Cow to stabilize muscles and prevent lower back discomfort. The sequence then progresses to Sun Salutations, modified for all levels, including those with chronic injuries, enhancing flexibility and circulation. Following this, deep stretches are practiced. The sequence concludes with Savasana, promoting relaxation and mental clarity. This holistic approach suits beginners and experienced yogis alike, focusing on flexibility, injury prevention, and preparing the body for meditation.
